KNIGHTHAWKS TOP PICK LIVING HIS DREAM
05/01/2014 - 4:26pm

By Brian Antonio -- Mark White started playing lacrosse after his parents signed him up when he was four years old. He instantly fell in love with the sport and made it a goal to become a professional.

“Growing up I always had the dream to one day play in the NLL. As I got older, I started to realize that by putting in the extra work in the gym and on the floor I could make that dream become a reality,” said White.

White signed a one-year deal with the Knighthawks in October of 2013 after he was selected by Rochester in the third round of the 2013 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. Before getting drafted with the 27th overall pick, White played in the Major Series Lacrosse with the Brampton Excelsiors for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

In 2012, he played for Mike Hasen, who also is the bench boss for the Knighthawks.

“He’s a gritty guy and he’ll go in the dirty areas,” said Hasen. “He’s not afraid to get his nose dirty and get that loose ball, and he pushes the ball up the floor very well.”

White showed great improvement through his two seasons for the Excelsiors, and appeared in all 20 games for them this past season, notching 10 points in those contests.

Mark is enjoying his time with the Knighthawks and says he couldn’t have asked to be drafted by a better organization, one that has won two consecutive league championships.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. Going to one of the best teams in the NLL is a pretty amazing feeling,” he said.

Although White says the game is similar between the two leagues. He did acknowledge differences between the two as he transitioned from Senior “A” ball to the National Lacrosse League.

“Speed is definitely one of the biggest differences. It’s a lot faster, your reaction time and decision making has to be a lot quicker,” he said.

Besides playing professionally, White works for Edge Lacrosse during the week and tries to balance his work life while also playing lacrosse.

“The job I have is pretty flexible. My weekends are free so it allows me to travel and practice with the team,” White explained.

White also hits the weight room three to five times a week. He primarily works out with Paul Dawson, but he still works out with Dan Dawson as well.

“Yeah, he’s definitely a mentor. He teaches me a lot on the floor and in the weight room. It’s definitely a cool feeling working out with Dan Dawson. He’s one of the best in the game and he’s a good guy to learn from.”
