KHAWKS' HOF PAT COUGEVAN HONORED BY HOMETOWN
10/18/2013 - 2:27pm

By Craig Rybczynski -- Pat Cougevan has always shied away from media attention and seldom boasts about his career accomplishments. With the exception of his muscular build, his co-workers at Biomet might not realize they spend every day alongside one of the finest lacrosse players – and people – that Penn Yan Academy has ever produced.

A standout lacrosse player at every level, Cougevan was recently honored by his high school alma mater with induction into their athletic hall of fame. Penn Yan Head Coach and Knighthawks Scout Brian Hobart said he “made kids dream" and “set the bar high.”

He moved that bar a little bit higher last Friday with his latest Hall of Fame induction. Cougevan was previously honored by The Greater Rochester Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse in 2006 and the Rochester Knighthawks in 2012.

“It was a fun weekend. I saw some old coaches and friends,” said Cougevan, who returned home with his wife and son. “You never play sports to make Hall of Fames. You play to compete and have fun, but it’s nice to be remembered for things you did.”

Cougevan joined three fellow athletes and the 1976 football team at the Friday night ceremony and Saturday on-field presentation at the Penn Yan football game. Cougevan, who grew up across the street from Penn Yan Academy, admitted it was “really special for his parents.”

“Cougs” played three seasons of varsity lacrosse at Penn Yan and was a High School All-American with the Mustangs. His success led him to nearby Syracuse University, where he excelled as a close defensemen from 1990-93. He also won two-time NCAA championships (1990 and 1993) with the Orange.

Cougevan began his career with the Knighthawks three seasons later in 1996 and would become one of the backbones of a defense that helped Rochester instantly become a title contender. He played in 102 regular season games and in four Championship Games. When he retired in 2009, he ranked in the Top 10 in team history in games played. His greatest moment was winning the Champion’s Cup in 2007. Individually, he was honored for his service on and off the field, winning the Knighthawks’ Community Service, Seventh Man and Comeback Player of the Year awards. In 2012, he received the top honor awarded by the organization, as he was inducted into the Knighthawks Hall of Fame along with longtime friend and teammate Regy Thorpe.

“Pat and I have a lot of history. We always had each other’s backs and are still friends to this day. We played together in college and in the pros. In 2007 we won a championship together and that was something special,” said Thorpe before the Knighthawks Hall of Fame induction. “Pat was a phenomenal player and one of the best stay-at-home defensemen of all time.”

This season, Cougevan plans to return to watch his former team play during their historic 20th season, which kicks off Saturday, December 28th at The Blue Cross Arena.

“Sometimes it seems like I could still play and see Regy at the arena,” said Cougevan, as he reminisced before dismissing the possibility. “I am proud that I can say I was a member of the Knighthawks.”
