AND THE WINNER IS...

(September 27, 2013)... The search for the Rochester Knighthawks' Play of the Year began with 16 candidates in a tournament-style bracket. For the past three months, fans have chosen which plays have advanced from the Elite 8 to the Finals, and have now chosen the winner. The best play from the Knighthawks' 2013 Championship Season is the Double Behind-the-Back Passes from the season-opener against the Stealth.

The first Play of the Week winner survived arguably the toughest region in the bracket - the Playmakers Region - to claim the crown. It defeated Cory Vitarelli's ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 highlight in the first round before topping Stephen Keogh's goal scored from the ground to reach the Final 4. After beating Dan Dawson's behind-the-back assist, the Double Behind-the-Back Passes slightly edged Matt Vinc's title-preserving save in the Finals with approximately 52% of the vote.

Vitarelli deposited the ball in the net past Stealth goalie Tyler Richards after the two around-the-world assist. He stated that he was simply lucky to be on the receiving end of two great passes.

“It’s nice that my play got voted, but realistically it’s me finishing off a nice play from Cody, who went to Johnny, and Johnny made a good pass to me,” said Vitarelli. “It was a great play by both of those guys.

“I was on the crease just watching ‘Jammer’ on top. He was getting double-teamed and almost faked a shot and threw it behind-the-back to Johnny. When Johnny got the ball, he could see the one guy sliding to him. It was in my stick before I even knew what was happening.”

Congratulations also go out to Peter Kolson from Fairport, N.Y., who voted from the winning play. Peter will receive a pair of game-worn Knighthawks' shorts. Thank you to all of the fans who voted each week and congratulations once again goes out to all of the weekly winners.
