(Rochester, July 26th)… The Six Nations Chiefs opened their first-round MSL playoff series against the Ajax-Pickering Rock and earned an 8-6 victory tonight at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. Rochester Knighthawks forward Craig Point scored two third-period goals to help the higher-seeded Chiefs take the opener.
“We have a good team but we have to gel as an offense,” said Point. “Our offense gets chances, but we have to start burying the ball.”
During the regular season, Point led the Chiefs in points with 70 this season with future Knighthawk Cody Jamieson not far behind with 62. Jamieson was not in the lineup tonight for Six Nations. The Chiefs are loaded with talent with the likes of Colin Doyle, Roger Vyse, Billy Dee Smith, Brendan Thenhaus, Tom Montour, Syracuse stud Stephen Keogh and Matt Vinc. Point said he expects a better effort in Game 2 from his teammates and himself.
“I wasn’t impressed with how I played the first two quarters,” he said. “But I had two big goals in the third quarter and helped the team. We all have to bring our ‘A’ games (not game).”
The Chiefs finished the regular season in third place in the MSL with a 10-6 record and are the top seed in the opening round with Peterborough and Brampton earning byes. Ajax is a huge underdog, finishing last in the league with a 3-13 mark. The Chiefs will look to take a 2-0 lead on Wednesday night in Ajax.
“We need to focus on the game in front of us,” said Point. “We need to play as a team because that’s how you win championships.”
