KNIGHTHAWKS GO FOR THE GOLD SATURDAY

(Manchester, England - July 23, 2010)… Four members of the Rochester Knighthawks and one Hall of Famer will battle for the gold medal Saturday, July 24th at the 2010 FIL World Championships. The 11:00 a.m. game will be broadcast live on ESPNU as Canada tries to repeat as world champions against Team USA.

Knighthawks John Grant Jr., Shawn Williams and Mac Allen are playing for the unbeaten Canadian team. Canada defeated Australia 15-6 Thursday in the semifinals and will now play the United States in a rematch of the 2006 Finals won by Canada. Former Knighthawks forward Randy Mearns is going for his second straight gold medal. The Canadian assistant coach has ties to Rochester, receiving Hall of Fame honors last season and helping the team win the 1997 championship.

The US returns to the title game after beating Japan 20-5 in their semifinal showdown. Defensive midfielder Chris Schiller scored his first goal of the tournament in the victory. The games are the first for the Penfield native.

During the tournament, Grant has led all Knighthawks players with 15 points (10+5), while Williams chipped in eight points (6+2). Long pole defenseman Mac Allen has played tough defense as Canada enters the Finals with an impressive 6-0 record. The Canadian defense has also limited opponents to just over five goals per game.
